  1. Schedules and conducts daily rounds on patient care units to review the status of patients who have been placed on barrier precautions.
  2. Determines the need for barrier precautions through clinical assessment and analysis of laboratory data.
  3. Identifies areas and situations which serve as potential sources of Infectious Disease transmission and takes necessary steps to correct potential transmission.
  4. Serves as reference resource to clinical and ancillary staff in defining which situations require barrier precautions and rationale for precautions.
  5. Insures that hospital staff adhere to proper, appropriate infection control practices.
  6. Collaborates with Occupational Health Service in the prevention and management of employees who have been exposed to communicable diseases.
  7. Provides education to all hospital staff including, but not limited to: HAI prevention strategies, general orientation; OSHA BBPs: respirator fit testing and training; hand hygiene; and tuberculosis.
  8. Performs/reviews surveillance of hospital acquired infections through data collection and analysis using NHSN definitions.
  9. Coordinates and documents surveillance activities in NHSN for the NYSDOH mandated reporting: HAIs; SSIs; C diff; CRE; MRSA, CLABs, and CAUTIs.
  10. Reports Notifiable Diseases and Conditions to the Department of Health using the computerized reporting system. Participates in the management of patients with communicable diseases through ongoing interaction with the clinical staff.
  11. Assists in the development, review and revision of departmental and facility wide infection control policies and procedures.
  12. Collaborates with the Microbiology Laboratory to monitor trends in multi-drug resistant bacteria.
  13. Attends on and off site administrative and educational meetings as scheduled and requested by the Department Director.
  14. Participates in regulatory agency survey preparedness through Tracer/EOC activities and meeting attendance.
  15. Prepares reports for the Infection Control Committee and/or Corporate Board, Clinical Departments as needed.
  16. Represents the Director of Infection Control at meetings and during his/her absence.
  17. Provides assistance and support to other hospital departments in meeting their regulatory requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Holds and maintains Certification in Infection Control (CIC) issued by the Certification Board of Infection

Control and Epidemiology (CBIC); and,

2. Master s degree from an accredited college or university in Epidemiology, Microbiology, Medical

Technology, Public Health, Nursing or a related field; and one (1) year of satisfactory full-time paid

experience in a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity, in the development of

infection prevention and control programs, analysis and reporting of health care-associated infections, and

other related infection prevention and control functions in a hospital or a health care setting; or

3. Bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university in fields, as described in 2 above; and three (3)

years of satisfactory, full-time paid progressively responsible experience, as described in 2 above, one (1)

year of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial, or supervisory capacity; or

4. A satisfactory equivalent of education, training, and/or experience. However, all candidates must have at

least a Bachelor s degree in fields, as described in 2 above, and hold and maintain a CIC Certification.
